A high-powered Manhattan lawyer with ties to President Donald Trump tried to keep abuse allegations against Connecticut Republican congressional candidate Tom Gilmer from getting out. Gilmer stopped his campaign for Connecticut’s eastern shoreline congressional district after he was arrested on domestic violence charges.
Marc Kasowitz represented Gilmer and used to be President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, according to the New York Times.
Gilmer’s Republican primary challenger is Justin Anderson. Anderson told state and local party leadership he had video evidence of Gilmer abusing a former girlfriend. Anderson says Kasowitz then sent him a cease and desist email.
Anderson provided The Day of New London Newspaper with copies of that email. In it, Kasowitz accused Anderson of making “false and defamatory statements” against Gilmer. He denied the abuse incident or the existence of the video.
Critics say the party did not properly vet allegations against Gilmer before it endorsed him on May 11th.
