Governor Dannel Malloy and lawmakers, along with gun violence prevention groups gathered in Hartford today to commemorate the one year anniversary of the post-Newtown gun control, school safety and mental health law.
Committee Approves Reduced Penalty Bill
The Judiciary Committee has approved a bill to reduce penalty zones for selling drugs near schools. The legislation addresses efforts by a group of lawmakers from some of the state’s urban communities. In Connecticut, a conviction for possessing or buying drugs within a drug-free zone triggers a mandatory minimum prison sentence of two to three years.
Lawmakers Reject Nash's Request
A legislative committee has rejected a request by Charla Nash to sue the state and seek financial damages. Nash was disfigured in 2009 after she was mauled by a friend’s pet chimpanzee.The Judiciary Committee voted on Wednesday to uphold last year's decision by the State Claims Commissioner.
Smoking Disparities Among Counties
Although smoking rates in Connecticut fell between 1996 and 2012, striking disparities persist among counties. Research from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington shows the widest gap is between Windham County and Fairfield County.
Officials Announce Medical Marijuana Dispensaries
State officials announced today that medical marijuana can be sold at dispensaries in Branford, Bridgeport, Bristol, Hartford, Montville and South Windsor. The dispensaries should be ready for business this summer.
Connecticut Water Says Fees Have Declined
Connecticut Water customers will see a 4 percent reduction in their water bills beginning today. Company officials say the reduction applies to residential, municipal, business and industrial customers. The plan is expected to save customers a total of $12.4 million over the next two years.
