State Sen. Tony Hwang speaks with Zhenzhen Wu during a delivery of PPE for front-line health care workers organized by volunteers of the Greater Hartford Chinese American community on April 17, 2020.

Members of Connecticut’s Chinese American community made a donation of personal protective equipment for the state’s health care workers Friday.

Local volunteers led by the Chinese Association for Science and Technology sourced 5,000 respirator masks and 15,000 surgical masks, as well as 4,000 gowns.

We depend on your support. Donate to Connecticut Public today.

State Sen. Tony Hwang says the effort was inspired by stories of those who are caring for COVID-19 patients.

“To hear the incredible stories of courage and selfless sacrifice of our front-line medical workers, it really is the call for Chinese Americans in Connecticut and around the world. Today is just a small sampling of the outpouring of support, initiative and creativity in being able to help those in need.”

Speaking at the state Capitol in Hartford where part of the donation was dropped off Friday, Hwang invoked Fred Rogers.

“There are helpers all around us,” he said. “In your uncertainty and your fear, all you need to do is look around you, and look for the helpers that are here for you. We’re here to recognize our front-line medical providers that are the helpers in saving people’s lives.”

Part of the donation was also dropped off at Yale New Haven Hospital.
