Around 100 people attended a meeting in Waterford on Monday night to discuss ideas for a proposed new state park.
Officials from the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and two other state agencies heard input from local residents on the future of the former Seaside Sanatorium.
Those ideas will be considered by Sasaki Associates, the consulting firm that will develop a master plan for the 34-acre site.
Among the decisions they must make: what to do with several abandoned buildings originally designed by noted architect Cass Gilbert as a sanatorium for children with tuberculosis. Principal of Sasaki Jason Hellendrung told the meeting, "We'll be exploring how to restore, preserve and re-use those buildings, and how those will become a foundation of this in the future."
One of the primary goals of the development he said, will be "continuing to promote and improve this site for recreation and public access to Long Island Sound."
