It's just a dance, right?

Actually, maybe that's the last thing the prom is. Maybe the photo is even more important, because it freezes you. It's your chance, as high school trickles away, to say "This is who I am. This will be who I was."

We've been looking at prom photos by Mary Ellen Mark, who will be on our show today, and they're striking in the range of emotional states they convey. We see joy, hesitation, confidence, detachment and some flat-out haunted looks.

Iraq War Veteran Returns to Teach Dance

More than six years after being deployed to Iraq, one Connecticut veteran is returning to that country. This time he is leaving his gun behind and taking his dance shoes.

Ballet companies far and wide are deep into Nutcracker mode this time of year. The Ballet Theater Company of West Hartford is no exception, but it may be the only production of the Nutcracker being choreographed by a former Marine. Roman Baca served in Iraq, and he joins us now by phone.

The Ballet Theater Company's production of The Nutcracker gets underway next week, December 15-18 at the Carol Autorino Center on the campus of St. Joseph College in West Hartford.

Now that the leaves have begun to turn, the fall performing arts season provides a welcome source of entertainment and amusement for many people. Live dance has a long tradition in Hartford, and the Hartford Ballet, an organization at which dancers including Mikhail Baryshnikov and General Hambrick once performed, had a long and fascinating history.
