We keep hearing that “small business” is what's going to drive an economic recovery. But I have a question: What is a small business anyway?
The Small Business Administration says anything under 500 employees is the number - but that's depending on the industry. The state’s jobs bill last year says it's under 50 employees, although most economists seem to agree under 100 is a more realistic and inclusive measurement.
But here's the thing: Most companies in the state actually employ less than 10 employees – at the beginning of 2010 there were 50 thousand businesses in the state with fewer than five employees.
Today, where we live, we're going to examine what it really means to be a small business...and what small businesses really mean to Connecticut's economy. We're broadcasting live from the beautiful Palace Theater in downtown Waterbury.
We'll be talking with our Business editor Harriet Jones - business experts and taking questions and ideas from our crowd here.
