Thousands took to the streets this week in cities across the nation to protest against President-elect Donald Trump. On Thursday, more than 300 people marched through the streets of downtown New Haven in a demonstration organized by immigrant rights group Unidad Latina en Acción.
Watch scenes from the protest in WNPR's video below:
New Haven is known as a sanctuary city, with policies that protect undocumented immigrants -- including a government-issued municipal ID card available to all residents regardless of immigration status.
During the presidential campaign, Trump called to eliminate all federal funding for sanctuary cities during his first 100 days in office.
East Haven activist Herman Zuniga emigrated from Ecuador to the United States 30 years ago as an undocumented worker. He?'s a citizen now, and he said he doesn't understand how Trump gained so much support with the rhetoric he used against minority groups.
“When you say, we’re going to build America again, we’re going to bring America back. To what? Bring it up from where? We are up already," Zuniga said.
ULA is planning another anti-Trump rally on the New Haven Green on Friday.
