UConn Board Votes to Close Torrington Satellite Campus

The University of Connecticut's Board of Trustees has voted to close the school's Torrington satellite campus.

UConn President Susan Herbst said the move is necessary because of state budget cuts and declining enrollment in Torrington, which has just 88 full-time students.

The branch will shut down at the end of the spring semester as a result of Wednesday's vote.

The move was opposed by municipal leaders in northwestern Connecticut, who say the school is abandoning its students in that part of the state.

UConn said it will offer all currently enrolled Torrington students placement at other UConn campuses, including at the one less than 30 miles away, in Waterbury.

School officials said they also will assist any student who chooses to transfer to another university.
