Two Sites Under Consideration for Connecticut State Police Firearms Training Center

Officials at the Department of Administrative Services said they’re now considering two locations in eastern Connecticut to relocate the state police firearms training facility.

In a statement, DAS Commissioner Melody Currey said of the sites that have been under consideration, they are the most isolated from residential properties.

One, in Griswold, is almost completely surrounded by the Pachaug State Forest.

Another, in Sprague, has substantial forest land buffering the area where the facility might be built.

There was strong pushback from homeowners living in other communities in the state under consideration to host the gun range.

Sites in Hampton, Canterbury, and Voluntown have been eliminated from the list of possible sites. East Windsor and Willington were also taken off the list.

The current Simsbury facility has wrestled for years with periodic flooding. The new complex is expected to be larger, with separate, pistol, active shooter, rifle, and shotgun ranges.
