The Navy's submarine force museum is opening a new exhibit dedicated to the history of Naval Submarine Base New London.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday to introduce the exhibit, which traces the history of the Groton base beginning with the creation of the New London Navy Yard in the 1860s.

Artifacts at the new exhibit include a telegraph from one of the first submarines stationed at the base and a submarine school training aid from World War II.

The museum features the submarine Nautilus and is adjacent to the Navy base that is the primary East Coast homeport for Navy attack submarines.

The event is part of a yearlong celebration designed by the governor as "Connecticut's Submarine Century."
