Bill Adds Unsolicited Text Messages to Do Not Call Registry
Unsolicited marketing by text message is now illegal in Connecticut. Governor Dannel Malloy said on Thursday that he signed legislation reducing what he calls unwanted, unsolicited commercial phone intrusions. The legislation adds text messages to the state’s “Do Not Call” registry.
Malloy Campaign Meets Public Finance Threshold
The re-election campaign of Governor Dannel Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman says it has reached the $250,000 threshold required to seek public financing. The Democratic ticket is submitting paperwork to obtain public money. Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton, who is seeking the Republican nomination for governor, and his running mate are fundraising to qualify for public financing for the August 12 GOP primary.
Newtown Victim's Memorial Fund Awards Scholarships
The family of a first-grade teacher killed in the 2012 massacre at the Sandy Hook Elementary School has awarded the first scholarships from a fund set up in her memory. Last week the Vicki Soto Memorial Fund awarded $5,026 scholarships to seniors Maggie Bodington from Stratford High School and Emily Mackay of Bunnell High School.
Report Says Lower Energy Demand Could Balance Supply
Greater efficiency, increased use of renewable energy sources, and other measures could cut New England's demand for natural gas and potentially avert the need to build a new pipeline. A report released today by the environmental advocacy group Environment Northeast shows how lowering demand for gas in the region could balance out the supply constraints that caused severe spikes in electricity prices in the past two years.
