Connecticut’s Starwood Hotels and Resorts is one of the companies condemning efforts by state legislatures to pass discriminatory legislation.
The Stamford-based business -- one of the world’s largest hotel companies -- signed a statement, along with American Airlines, Apple, Microsoft, and five other multinational corporations, saying that equality in the workplace is a business priority to foster talent and innovation.
It says that bills that allow discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people are bad for business and it calls on public officials to defeat or abandon efforts to enact this type of legislation.
The statement, which is backed by the Human Rights Campaign, an LGBT civil rights organization, follows the passage of religious freedom legislation in Indiana, which its critics claim would allow businesses to legally refuse to serve gays and lesbians. Arkansas has also passed similar legislation this week.
HRC is inviting more businesses to sign on the effort to condemn such moves.
