Starwood to Be Bought By Marriott

Starwood
Starwood's Stamford headquarters building

Starwood, the hotels group which is Stamford’s largest employer, is being bought by Marriott International. Marriott will pay $12.2 billion for Starwood. The combined company will be the largest hotel group in the world, with more than 5,000 properties.

The partners say they hope the deal will close in mid-2016.

Starwood’s corporate headquarters employs more than 1,000 people in Stamford — but Marriott has said it will base the combined company’s headquarters at its own current location in Maryland. It has promised to save $200 million a year by what it described as administrative efficiencies, raising questions about how many jobs it might retain in Stamford.

Neither company has so far commented on employment implications.

Starwood has been a fixture in Stamford since 2012, and it has received state incentives to grow employment in Connecticut.
