The chief of staff to Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra says he plans to give up his city car. As WNPR's Jeff Cohen reports, this comes a few weeks after news broke that he got a police-issued vehicle and a $20,000 raise.
Earlier this year, Mayor Segarra traded in his fuel-efficient Toyota Prius for an SUV -- one that was bought for police use initially. His chief of staff, Jared Kupiec, got an older SUV.
Now, in an interview with WNPR, Kupiec says the mayor asked him to give the car back. Segarra told him he was concerned with gas mileage, and that he wanted the vehicle returned to the police department's fleet. Kupiec said the two men also didn't want to appear "frivolous" with the city's resources.
Kupiec now drives a city-issued Ford Fusion. But he says he'll soon give that car back, too. The chief of staff says he prefers using a personal vehicle.
For WNPR, I'm Jeff Cohen.
