Highway ramps will likely be much busier than this come Memorial Day

Travel forecasters are predicting busy highways this Memorial Day weekend. AAA expects more than 38 million people to travel over the holiday, the highest volume in a decade.

AAA of Southern New England spokesman David Raposa said the vast majority of travelers will take their cars thanks to low gas prices. He expects a decrease in bus and train travel.

“It’s the type of vacation weekend that’s truly a weekend,” said Raposa. “So it may be easier for folks to jump into the car and go somewhere rather than take a bus or take a train.”

In New England, some 1.5 million people are likely to hit the roads. Raposa said that’s because the region provides plenty of destinations within easy distance.

“If you go further out west, places where, you know 50 miles may be how far you need to go to go to the grocery store. Here you have such a variety of places to go to we aren’t surprised to see people from this part of the country traveling.”

Raposa said all this means there will likely be heavy traffic, so give yourself an extra hour to make it to your destination.
