The day after Thanksgiving has come to be known as Black Friday. Dave Isay is trying to change that.
Isay, of course, is the man behind StoryCorps - the long running public radio series and comprehensive oral history project that has recorded some 40,000 stories of America for future generations. Since 2008, he’s gotten behind a new concept - the “National Day of Listening” - where everyone is encouraged to record a loved one. This year, the theme is “thank a teacher.” Isay will share stories of favorite teachers, and talk about how you can get involved.
Also, this weekend, WNPR premeires the latest special from public radio pioneers The Kitchen Sisters. It’s called The Hidden World of Girls - hosted by Mean Girls writer and comedian Tina Fey. It’s an exploration of the stories of girls becoming women - and their rituals, secrets, and little heard stories.
