Hamden Man Who Pledged Allegiance To ISIS Ruled Incompetent To Stand Trial

A Connecticut man accused of pledging allegiance to -- and wanting to fight for --- the Islamic State has been ruled incompetent to stand trial. Hearst Connecticut Media reports Kevin Iman McCormick of Hamden was returned to federal custody to receive treatment with the goal of restoring his competence.

A federal judge cited a doctor's report in the ruling.

The Justice Department alleged that McCormick made a video on Oct. 19, 2019 pledging allegiance to ISIS. He also purchased a plane ticket from Toronto to Jordan. He was arrested at a small Connecticut airport where he expected to board a plane to Canada.

He was charged with attempting to provide material support to ISIS.

This report includes information from the Associated Press.
