Governor Dannel Malloy said he’s not among those who are calling for expanded gaming in Connecticut to counter new competition from Massachusetts. The governor told reporters that the decision whether to allow more gambling facilities is a legislative matter, and he won’t be playing a lead role.

Malloy pointed to the recent vocal opposition to Keno as evidence that many people in the state don’t want to see more gaming.

Vo-Tech Funding Request

The state bond commission will vote on new funding for Connecticut’s technical high schools later this week. The requested $5 million is intended to expand the manufacturing programs at ten of the schools. Schools in Bristol, Bridgeport, Manchester, Middletown, and elsewhere want to replace outdated equipment and upgrade machinery so that students can be trained in CNC techniques -- one of the most in-demand skills among manufacturing firms in the state.

Survey Finds Robust Hiring

Connecticut’s small businesses are hiring at a faster rate than their peers around the nation, according to a surveycarried out by The Hartford. The insurer’s Small Business Success Study said that 59 percent of greater Hartford small businesses questioned had hired in the last 12 months, compared to 30 percent nationally. Over half of the Connecticut businesses said significantly growing their operations was their primary goal.
