There's a debate over whether college should prepare kids with specific skills that will prepare them for jobs, or give them a wide-ranging but more general liberal arts education.
The simmering controversy has intensified in the face of rising college costs and bleak job prospects. There are more college-educated people than ever before, but supply is outpacing the demand.
Many students today are told they need to go to college, whether they're ready or not. Many are graduating, but some are not, with jobs that don't pay enough to erase the debt they accumulated along the way.
Is the main purpose of education to school the mind to be a well-informed citizen, and think independently? If so, do we need higher education to do that? If not: what is the purpose of college?
