The start of winter high school sports in Connecticut is officially delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference, Connecticut’s governing body of high school sports, voted Tuesday to postpone winter sports like basketball and ice hockey to January 19.
“Today’s action supports our member schools while they continue to manage rising COVID numbers within their communities and experience widespread movements to distance learning,” read a CIAC statement sent to Connecticut Public Radio.
Earlier this year, the state had to cancel the winter sports championships. When this winter sports season starts – primarily indoors – the games will look a bit different than season’s past. Basketball and hockey players must wear masks. Wrestling, a sport deemed “high-risk”, won’t be allowed.
