Blast of Snow Arrives; Legislative Opening Delayed

Heavy, wet snow has blanketed the region on Wednesday, leaving up to eight inches of snow along the shoreline and up to a foot of snow in the northern part of the state. The next system to watch is Sunday night into Monday. For Wednesday evening, mostly cloudy skies with temperatures in the teens.

Start of Legislative Session Delayed

Legislative leaders and Governor Dannel Malloy's office delayed the start of the General Assembly session due to the weather. The legislature will commence at noon on Thursday.

CVS Ends Cigarette Sales October 1

The CVS-Caremark pharmacy chain said it will stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products effective in October. There are more than 7,600 stores across the nation. The company's decision will cost an estimated $2 billion in sales from tobacco buyers. CVS had overall sales in 2012 of more than $120 billion.

High Number of U.S. Exonerations

The National Registry of Exonerations reported 87 exonerations in the United States in 2013. The year's total number of exonerations was at 87, with two cases added in 2014. Some of the states with the most exonerations in 2013 include five in Connecticut, 13 in Texas, and eight in New York.

High Insurance Rates in Fairfield County

Fairfield County has the ninth-highest insurance rates under Obamacare. A report by Kaiser Health News shows the average monthly premium for the most popular plans under Obamacare is $383 in Fairfield. That's 21 percent higher than in Hartford County, and seven percent higher than in New Haven County.
