At the University of Connecticut's Storrs campus, plans for a major expansion are being hindered by a lack of water. So the university is looking at a few options for a new water supply, including drawing water from the Farmington River.
Joining us to talk about the proposals is Karl Wagener, executive director of the Council on Environmental Quality.
The most controversial proposal is a 20-mile water main that would potentially be constructed from Manchester to Mansfield, extending water supply to towns along the way.
Wagener said an environmental impact evaluation by a UConn-hired consultant considered three options for water supply, and regards them all equally. The CEQ recommends ranking the options, and pass along its recommendations to other agencies. A decision will come from the state's Office of Policy and Management, following a public comment period which ends on January 4.
