Six seals have been spotted on the North Shore of Long Island, off Centre Island.
An executive director of the Riverhead Foundation said seals are more typically seen on the East End. Most seals live in cold waters off Maine, Nova Scotia, and Massachusetts.
Biologist Rob DiGiovanni identified the six seals spotted by a retired Newsday reporter on Sunday as "robust" harbor seals, according to Newsday.
While seals enjoy colder weather, DiGiovanni said the warmer temperatures on Sunday were "not a deal breaker for them."
DiGiovanni attributes the increasing number of seals on Long Island to the 1972 Marine Mammal Protection Act, which prohibits the killing of seals.
He urged anyone who spots a seal to contact the foundation's hotline at (631) 369-9829.
