The proposed merger of Northeast Utilities and NSTAR would create the third largest utility in the country and the largest in New England
NU of course is based in Connecticut and NStar in Massachusetts. The companies would retain headquarters in both states, but the top executives would be in Boston.
So, what does this mean for you?
Well, in Connecticut, officials are worried that the new company might not have the interests of Connecticut ratepayers in mind. And, regulators in Massachusetts vow to apply tough standards of review, writing that the companies “must demonstrate that the proposed transaction provides benefits that outweigh the costs.
Today, where we live, we’ll talk with Greg Butler, Senior Vice President and General Counsel of the Northeast Utilities system about the merger, electric rates and powering the Northeast.
Speaking of power – the nuclear industry has had to answer lots of questions after the disaster in Japan. We’ll talk with an official from Dominion, which runs the Millstone plant in Connecticut – and one from Public Citizen, that’s voicing concerns about our reliance on nuclear power.
