New Haven's Union Station, which will be re-established as an area focal point as part of the downtown renewal project.

New Haven has received a $20 million federal grant to help transform the city's downtown and Route 34 area.

The grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation is from nearly $500 million made available for projects around the country under the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery, or TIGER, program.

New Haven's grant will help the city develop a more walkable downtown area by helping to transform a highway stub into an urban boulevard with new street connections. This project continues Route 34's conversion from a limited-access highway to an urban boulevard, with new intersections, bike and pedestrian enhancements and streetscape improvements.

The project reconnects the local street grid, re-establishes Union Station as a focal point of the area and improves connections to the Hill neighborhood.
