Connecticut’s largest electric utility has unveiled the latest phase of its plans to upgrade transmission in the state.
Connecticut Light & Power’s new infrastructure improvements call for a $251 million project in Eastern Connecticut. It would include almost 40 miles of new power lines, and better substations in Lebanon and Killingly.
The 345 kilovolt line would connect to one in Rhode Island which runs to Massachusetts. This latest plan is part of a four stage project which also includes a $700 million power line to run between Bloomfield and the Mass border. The utility is liaising with towns along the routes that would be affected by the Eastern Connecticut portion it will hold meetings for residents to explain the plans in the coming weeks.
CL&P sees upgrades to transmission lines as a crucial part of relieving the state’s power bottlenecks, improving reliability at times of peak demand, and helping ratepayers avoid federally mandated congestion charges.
